Who hasn’t heard over and over that the only thing that is constant is change?
Heraclitus, an ancient Greek philosopher, is known for his doctrine of change being central to the universe. Plato quotes him as, “Everything changes and nothing stands still.”
When I think of things that are constant – because I experience it everywhere in every moment – I think of energy which is constantly changing. Physics tells us that energy cannot be created or destroyed, it only changes from one form to another.1
Isn’t it ironic that the one thing most people resist and carry an energy of fear around – change – is truly the only stable thing we experience in life, at work and in the universe? Yet, most people do everything in their power to keep things status quo. They work to keep things as their definition of stable in order to feel safe and in control so that when things inevitably change they feel completely powerless and like victims of that change.
When we look at change as part of the natural laws of the universe will that upgrade our view from one of having a victim experience to one of a willing participant and contributor?
Constant change is one of the only stable things in our experience.
(I may start to say that the only constants are energy and change)…
If we see change as what takes away our safety it’s difficult to adapt and become resilient in changing times. Much like how our mindset around stress dictates what we experience physically, mentally and emotionally when in stress if we upgrade our perspective that change is the only stable thing in the world and should be expected, can change then support us in a new way physically, mentally and emotionally?
At Thrive we believe, “There Is Magic In Disruption” and work with client’s to practice new perspectives employing the brain’s plasticity to rewrite patterns of response and create new neural pathways that support them. Developmental science has found staying in the same patterns of response is detrimental to cognitive growth. So change – especially in routine – can stimulate the nervous system and allow you to grow new neural pathways. If you level up your perspective and begin to appreciate the benefits of change you can use change to your advantage.
One way to level up is to recognize that the one thing that stays stable is YOU in the sense that all you can control is you. The ebb and flow of change is constant and when you can anchor to a point of self or your Inner Truth you can always come back to center no matter the circumstances or change.

It’s staying in, it’s gonna find another way
As I sit here in this misery
I don’t think I’ll ever no
See the sun from here
And oh as I fade away
They’ll all look at me and say, and they’ll say
Hey look at him, I’ll never live that way
And that’s okay
They’re just afraid to change…”
