Know what really grinds my gears?1
Triggers. Triggers grind my gears.
And thank goodness for that.
I used to believe that triggers were bad and avoided them at all costs which sent me into the feeling of anxiety because I worked so hard to push them down inside and pretend that everything was peachy-keen.
In the words of Maya Angelou, “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.”
Did you know that triggers are supposed to grind your gears?
Before I learned about my H-IOS and “knew better,” something triggered my gears and they wanted to grind but I always threw a wrench in them because I didn’t want to experience unpleasant things and it was easier to pretend nothing bothered me. This eventually caused me to lose my…well, you know…
“Triggers are stimuli that cause a visceral reaction to subconscious
programming in your H-IOS.”2
Triggers had a negative connotation for me so I only saw the negative patterns that ran in my subconscious and I didn’t like the awareness that I was merely reacting to life.
As I practice accepting that grinding gears, put in motion by negative AND positive triggers, are ok and get curious about patterns that are running – instead of throwing a wrench in – I get to truly figure myself out and create an experience of life that feels really good.
Keeping my gears, or components (thoughts, emotions, behaviors, beliefs, desires and Inner Truth), from grinding together felt good in the short-term but not in the long-term. A few gears got really good at turning together to produce reactions that felt really bad. Then I learned to let the entire mechanism…the entire operating system…all of my gears engage and work together!
Triggers grind my gears. Thank goodness for that.
