And…. JUMP!
I used to expect that the afterglow of a big step would be just as delightful as the anticipation. Instead, I’ve learned a whole lot about reverb.
What’s reverb? For me, it often feels like a pit in my stomach. It’s the “uh oh, what did I just do?!” and “now what’s going to happen?” It is a second-guessing process that makes me question my decision making. Even though I was sure it was the right next step and I was feeling ready, that icky feeling hits and confusion sets in.
Reverb is the post-workout sore muscle of personal growth. You know how your muscles get sore after a tough workout? When we stretch our personal limits, there’s a similar phenomenon. Our “normal” needs to adjust when we grow.
- You send a resume to a job you really want. You’ve read the email 14 times. And… Send. Stomach turns, thoughts run wild, the email you felt good about 2 minutes ago suddenly feels terrible.
- You decide to tell someone how you feel. It’s time. You’re ready. You muster your courage and do it. You did it! Now the reverb. What’s going to happen? What are they thinking? Did I do/say/be the right thing?? Maybe I shouldn’t have said that!
- You find yourself in a challenging situation. You handle the conflict to the best of your ability. Minutes later, you’re shaky and wondering what just happened.
- Remember this is normal human stuff. Once I realized that reverb wasn’t a bad omen that I had taken a wrong turn, it was easier to relax into it and trust that it was a normal process.
- Celebrate the stretch! When your muscles are sore after a workout, you don’t question the exercise. You know that you are making progress and growing. Use reverb as a reminder to celebrate that you are making progress and growing.
- Be nice to yourself. Reverb can trigger self-doubt and cause us to question the decisions we make. Remind yourself that you’re doing the best you can and you’re learning.
- Feel the adrenaline rush. It’s fascinating to just feel the physical sensations of reverb. You can handle it. You’re okay. The feeling will pass.
- Get support. Being authentic about how you’re feeling and sharing it with someone is one of the best ways to normalize it and find your way through.

Hello! In the spirit of reverb, I wanted to share my very first professional headshot that I used when I set up my coaching business in 2009. Looking back on this time, I can still vividly recall sending out my first email newsletter. I had been preparing for over a year, and I was ready and very excited. I clicked send. Then I paced around my house for a long time trying to understand and navigate the reverb. I’ve come a long way since then, and I’d love to help you navigate your life adventure.
