I just finished a great book, “The Surrender Experiment: My Journey into Life’s Perfection,” by Michael A. Singer.
It’s a story of what happened when (per the author’s website), “after a deep spiritual awakening, he decided to let go of his personal preferences and simply let life call the shots.”
At first I was resistant to the message because I like my personal preferences. As I read on remaining open to the experiment, I realized that Singer’s exercise is very similar to one of the Thrive Human Development Principles, “Trust Makes Life Better.” I also carry the mantra “trust in the perfection of this unfolding” with me.
So why was I resisting his message yet I set my intentions daily to live in trust of the unfolding?
For me, what differs is the way Thrive teaches this and how I practice because you’re not asked to set aside personal preferences and just let life flow.
Thrive asks you to check in with your H-IOS (Human Internal Operating System) – especially your desires – and bring your components (thoughts, emotions, beliefs, behaviors, and Inner Truth) into alignment, working in the same direction and then release control. Let life work the magic of unfolding as you tend to the only thing you can control…your H-IOS…you.
This practice allows me to keep my preferences (desires) in tact while taking note of when the “I should’s,” “stubbornness” or “this is the way we’ve always done it” start to get in the way and dampen the miraculous flow of life.
I frustratingly experienced “this is the way we have to do it because this is the way we’ve always done it” so often in the corporate world. The world of processes and systems and stymied creative innovation. The world where employees are asked to be thought leaders and risk-takers yet all within the limitations of policies and procedures that made sense at one time but are past their prime.
It’s time for the practice of trust and letting life flow to enter the business world more. It’s time for leaders to embrace the full potentiality of their employees expertise, intuition and innovation to experience momentum. It’s time to invest time and trust and training that focuses on developing the person first – their H-IOS first – the human first – and from there the talent will have all they need to breath life into the company.
By releasing some preferences of how things are done, investing in sustainable people development and truly trusting in the people that make up the fabric of the company, the tapestry of success that unfolds will take your breath away.
Playing With the Author – Jenn Fredericks
Sometimes people ask me how I handle “letting life flow” with all that life has to throw at us without getting thrown out of alignment and completely losing my…stuff.
It’s not that I don’t ever fall out of alignment, I am human, I do. It’s that I practice my tools all the time, not just when I am in times of crisis, so that the neural pathways that help direct my response are more solid and work more like muscle memory to bring me back on track. I always start with breath. Then presence with myself and checking in with my H-IOS. My meditation practice certainly helps with putting all of these skills into play. Want to see how?
