Most people plan in advance for their holiday dinner menu and holiday social menu. But, very few take the time to plan their emotional menu. Have you?
Emotions can run especially high during the holiday season. Long periods spent with relatives can lead to anxiety and turmoil for a lot of people. Although not everyone experiences emotional distress during the holidays, uncomfortable situations or frustrating dynamics do arise.
If your menu includes any of these holiday treats, consider these healthier alternatives:
To maintain your power in any moment, ask yourself these energy-maintaining questions:
- How do I want to RESPOND in this moment (calmly, patiently, powerfully, I just want to hide in a dark room with a gallon of ice cream)?
- How do I want to FEEL in this moment (happy, joyful, content, every complex can’t-decide-what-to-do-with-it emotion on the planet)?
- Who do I want to BE in this moment (balanced, grounded, a kind person, someone who doesn’t wind up in jail)?
- What would I RATHER experience in this moment (love, fun interactions, meaningful conversation, needles in my eyeballs)?
You have a choice as to whether or not you’re going to eat what’s being dished out. And in each moment, you get to choose how you’re going to feel and if or how you’re going to respond.
Coming back to what you need and how you want to move forward in each moment is very powerful!
The frosting on the cake is…it’s scientifically proven that your body processes food and absorbs vitamins and nutrients more efficiently when you are in a positive state.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

The holidays are a cherished time for me and my family. This holiday season we will be celebrating it without the physical presence of my father and both of my in-laws. This will be an unfamiliar experience for us and I’m sure we’ll be utilizing healthy tools to navigate the season. We are very fortunate to know however, that we can choose to focus on the joyful memories of holidays past and on the new ones we’re creating.
I wish you all the same! HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
