Oh Wise One

The other day I found myself saying, “Yes, share your knowledge with me, oh wise one.”

It wasn’t Rumi, or the Dalai Lama…or even Confucius.

I was watching an episode of The Voice where Snoop Dog was the guest mentor.

Through the years I’ve agreed with many Snoop-isms:

  • “So just chill, ’til the next episode.”
  • “[…] laid back […]”
  • “Whatever it is you do you have to master your craft.”

And this one really resonates with me:

“You got to grow into knowing who you are.”

Snoop said this to one of the contestants he was mentoring.

There is a point in time, I imagine you can identify when it was for you, when the free and easy days of being a kid dissipate and you think, “I need to know who I am. And I need to know it all at once. And then be that for the rest of my life.”

It was true for me and when it didn’t happen that way I felt like I was failing.

How about you?

Thankfully I started to practice Thrive’s Human Development Principles, especially believing “it’s all normal human stuff,” and that if things don’t go the way I plan or I don’t feel the way I think I should I am not a failure…or broken.

Nobody’s broken, we’re all just trying to figure it out.

What’s happening in those times is that we’re growing into knowing who we are.

If growth serves your experience of life in those moments, days, or years (spoiler: it usually does whether or not we like it) then allow yourself to change and flow and grow.

“You can teach an old dog a new trick if that old dog listens.”

– Snoop Dogg

Knowing this growth is (and you are) normal can be liberating and make the experience easier…better, even.
